Independence day is one for family time, finger licking BBQ and a night full of memories with unforgettable friends. This day was a eye-wakening experience for me because it was INDEPENDENCE day and I recognized how DEPENDENT I had been. DEPENDENT on people’s opinions, dependent on life to come and work a miracle that I needed to create for myself.
As a recent graduate from college, I’ve been faced with the obstacles of what should I do, work a boring 9 to 5 and complain about how much I hate to anyone with a ear? or should I fight and push for a career that’s just as rewarding financially as it is in the sanity department. I decided the second option.
I may not know much, but I know wherever I go, my passion for fashion follows me. When I’m event planning fashion shows or styling models, I feel that I have piece of heaven right here on this place called earth, but too reminiscent of hell.
I want to be happy and to truly be happy I have to let go of those that have hurt me, those that smile in your face but wish the worst for you.
Tamar came to Chicago on June 6, yes I know I’m just a TAD bit late. I wanted to look bold and I wanted to stand out. I don’t really have anything else to say about this. I had fun, she was about 2.5 hrs late to take the stage, buttttt she slayed. Thanks for a good time Tamar, but really wish it had been Toni instead.
Condolences to PETA, but furs are hitting men’s fashion runways this season harder than Lindsay Lohan hit rock bottom. Of course, before the runways ever declared this massive new look as a trend, stars such as Kanye West, Pharrell and more were the originator’s for this season’s new fad. From bearskin rugs, shawls, hats and neck pieces, there are various ways that fur can be worn. For a recent fashion show that I coördinated, I decided to wear a black fur that would be the signature piece for this all-white outfit.
My inspiration for this outfit was definitely Rihanna. During a recent trip to London for fashion week, she wore an all black ensemble with a statement piece of a white fur. She looked so cool so I decided to recreate her look, but in white.
I found these glasses, which I call “Lady Gaga Telephone video glasses” inside of a store on Venice Beach during a recent trip to California. They were $10 and I was super excited to find them. These glasses add a certain level of classiness to any outfit!
White button-up shirt: Walmart $13
White Skinny jeans: Rue 21 $7
Statement Fur: Banana Republic (purchased from EBAY) $36
Whether it’s a dog’s mesmerizing eyes, its sharp, attention-grabbing bark or the way its backstory pulls at your heart like the tragic ending of Titanic, one thing’s sure, we are all faced with the obstacle of wondering if that dog will be the right fit into our lives. Sounds a lot like love, right? It wasn’t until a recent chitchat with one of my close friends, that I realized love has so many mind-bottling similarities to a dog and one wrong move could mean a earthshaking tear in your heart or worse, a set of destructive bite marks in your favorite pair of shoes!
It’s no secret that society has a disturbing fixture on an objects outer appearance and we all know that in love and WAR dog adoption, the better looking ones have their shelter cages frequented heavily, but what usually happens after the commitment to that dog turns from causal visiting to a permanent responsibility depends on how good of an owner you are, how well-trained they are and if your tasty doggy treats are good enough for them to keep doing the tricks you taught them.
To Leash or Not to Leash
This next lesson is one of major importance. There are those dogs that can run as wild as a kid’s first year at college, but still know where home is and stay loyal. Then, there are those that must be kept on a leash at all times when outside the safety zone known as the four white walls of your bedroom. Why? Because, a they are only loyal to their bone and could care less whether their treats come from you or any stranger walking past.
The key to maintaining these dogs is to have them trained. It is up to you to take in that animal for what they are initially and mold them into the perfect pet. Remember, that a dog, only continues to do tricks if they are motivated, recognized and rewarded for their actions. Once your man has lived up to your expectations on how a man should treat you, it is okay to reward him with something he likes.
Every Dog Needs Compromise
When training an animal, you have to allow the dog to do as it pleases, like by taking it to the dog park to chase its tail for five hours and bark at other dogs that it may feel foolishly threatened by. While all of this may not interest you in the least bit and can grown overwhelmingly tiring, as a good owner you must compromise. If a man is emotionally satisfying your needs, it is only fair to satisfy his.
Recognize that training a new puppy takes time and effort. Relationships do not happen overnight. And much like a relationship, it takes time for puppies to learn and mature into the dogs we all know and love. But once you get it right, it’s really right! One day, your dog will learn to listen to you, and eventually, begin to obey commands without even needing a treat. \
When I wake up in the morning, I tend NOT to have an insatiable taste for toast, eggs or even honey smoked ham, I always have a hunger that only one thing can actually fulfill, fashion. I usually jump out of bed, eagerly dashing to my little piece of heaven on earth, what’s that? My closet!
Most of my looks are usually made moments before I’m suppose to walk out of apartment, which usually makes me a tad bit late for whatever appointments, meetings, classes or schedule I previously had. This look was one I adore. I love the colors of green and peach against each other. The caramel colored blazer was a really nice touch added to the outfit.
The peach colored button-up: $2.00 (thrift store)
Blazer: $5.00 (thrift store)
Black penny loafers: $3.00 (Thrift store)
My advice to everyone going out is to mix colors that are different. Have fun with it because if you have fun with your style it shows! Plus, who doesn’t like to be noticed when going out with friends or even solo. What do you think about this outfit?
Express yourself, don’t repress yourself. Why? It’s human nature…,
For awhile I found myself screaming quietly, “Get me, get me out of this box, I feel so claustrophobic in here.”ThisPoor Boy With Rich Taste just got the chance to do just that! GLAM’s “Pop Art” Fashion show was graced by more than 22 models, dazzling in designs created from garbage bags, tissue, newspaper, caution tape and duct tape.
Usually the shows are highly theatrical with dancing, modeling routines, celebrity hosts and acting, but this one was an intimate affair stripped of those things and putting the attention exactly where it belongs, on the fashion.
Usually I don’t rip the runway, however I was overcome with a desire to express myself that burned brighter than the fear trying to stop my shine. The spotlights hit the runway, as the line behind the stage formed of eager models ready to strut their stuff. My heart was now beating faster than a southern hummingbird’s wings. The time had come…I hit the runway and left any negative thoughts behind me as my feet hit the pavements in a rapid confident pace. It was like eating bucket loads of your favorite guilty pleasured food, but not gaining any weight…price$$.
The scene was “Out of the Box” fashion and I chose to wear the daring outfit pictured above because it’s official, spring is here. Some people may go for the light, airy colors or shoot for something more bold? For me, I chose this eclectic outfit that was a vibrant mix of colors placed cleverly underneath a cool African printed blazer I found at the thrift store.
This experience taught me that expressing yourself can come in may forms that include but are not limited to art, fashion, writing and more! The outlet chosen for expression does not matter because it takes great courage to be…out of the box.
She’s wearing that? Oh my, he’s wearing those? We’ve all been there. Fashion trends in college have more OMG moments than Madonna’s controversial career. How many times have you walked on campus and seen students strutting to class in…pajamas? Yes, I said it. I honestly wonder where are the fashion police when you need them.
You are the clothes you wear, which is why the year 2013 holds infinite possibilities for your wardrobe, but first you have to contend with that big fat pile of bad style choices taking up your closet and everyday wardrobe. There is no reason that you shouldn’t dress up everyday because glamour isn’t only reserved for the rich and famous and you never know who you’ll run into. David Beckham or Rihanna at the grocery store? Hey, stranger things have happened.
But if none of these reasons were enough for you then remember, nothing beats the rush you feel when you look in the mirror and LOVE what you see and I definitely loved my outfit (above photo). I rocked this turquoise blazer, with a peach over-sized vest, dark purple button-up with a striped purple tie. I paired these with some loose fitted baby blue pants.
All of these items were found in the magical land of the thrift store. Can you say fashion on a dime!
Whether you‘re at work or at play, your clothing choices send a message about you–are you sending the one you want?
A Fashion fanatic entranced by the styles of yesterday’s looks. I’m a window shopping extraordinaire, making thrifted items into a fashionable ensemble more fit for a runway. There is an unspoken rule that people have problems defining, accepting and realizing who they are, however, I am the exception.
Fashion is a way to express myself and escape from the suffocating pint-sized box that everyone seems to be trapped in. It wasn’t until college that I started to really understand the power of fashion. The ability to turn heads the moment you walk into a room. It is empowering once you understand style, the process is infinitely enjoyable. I truly believe that finding and embracing your unique style is priceless.
Sometimes my life can seem as chaotic as keeping up with Lindsay Lohan’s criminal record, but all my problems seem to go away when I’m Pushing through the crisp white door of my favorite clothing store, as the cool chill of air hits me; my desires for instant gratification is met as I delve further into the store whisking through aisles containing countless designers hard work.
My wallet begins to suffocate as I throw another item into a cart that is now as full as a pregnant woman’s belly. This feeling can only be described as invigorating, my eyes follow the colors, shapes and styles the displays offer. This is fashion. This is me. In a lot of ways I consider myself the male equivalent of Sarah Jessica Parker. Fashionable, charming, poor with rich taste and figuring out this thing called love in a city of normalcy.
I’m 22-years-young majoring in journalism and trying to break into the fashion industry the best I know how. Follow me on this journey as I go through everyday life, problems, and successes all while looking good doing it.
Do you remember the saying “In order to be the part, you have to look the part?” But, in order to dress the part, isn’t it expensive? Nope! Ladies, I bet you can find a classy peplum skirt with a pencil skirt and a snazzy pair of heels for less than fifteen bucks. And as for you gentlemen, you can get a nice pair of pants, a shirt, and a chic blazer for dirt cheap. Yes people, you can put together a sharp ensemble without breaking the bank.
I am a fashion connoisseur, who takes the vintage style of yesterday and adds a modern spin to create a posh look. Yes, I must admit my appetite for fashion is pretty hefty, but nothing soothes my hunger like the tantalizing prices of a sales rack. Don’t get me wrong, it’s okay to splurge on a garment that’s full price—as long as it’s stylish of course. Other than that, I gravitate towards the clearance section. Falling into a trance as the 50-75% off signs lures me in. Going from rack to rack, finding the most stylish clothes, my money fiends to be spent. As the checker rings me up, my eyes begin to flicker with excitement from the prices of my purchases, leaving nothing but pure elation coursing through my veins and my wallet.
I am a broke 20 year old fashionista, studying Kinesiology and Sports Studies and minoring in Advertising. Follow me and Poor Boy as we take you on an adventure of life’s ups and downs one outfit at a time.
Do you ever think about what the color of your tie, pants or blouse is really saying?!! in some crazy, subtle way, colors can speak volumes about a person before they ever open their mouths.
This perhaps may be one of the very reasons why color blocking is one of this spring’s hottest fashion trends, and I’m ready to see color galore when the dreary snow and icy winds melt away.
Like for instance, red can be the color of dominance, power and attention. Blue is the color of beauty, pink is the color of compassion and femininity and gold is the color of prestige. Take a look at my outfit above.
While I was getting dressed to go out for dinner with a few close friends at this nice little secluded restaurant we found exploring the town , I decided to spice it up with a pair of strawberry red pants from Forever 21, a blue and white striped belt, a blue collared shirt, paired with a plaid blue shirt worn around my shoulders, and a pair of classic brown canvas boat shoes, which were all purchased from the clothing store Rue 21.
The rich vibrant shades of color definitely gave me a bit more confidence when I stepped out on the town and now I challenge you to do the same. Put your best foot forward in a outfit that would be a color blockers dream and post it below!
